Thrilling instrumental songs with influences from roots, indie rock and free jazz. Improvisation plays a major role on the second album from Kapok.
After their debut album 'Flatlands' (2001) the trio played a hundred concerts in The Netherlands and abroad and won awards such as Dutch Jazz Competition and the European Jazz Competition. During this period they devoloped their new reportoire and the live-experience they gained can be sensed in the music.
As an inspiring recording location with the compliant acoustics, Kapok found the perfect place in the 13th century castle 'Beverweerd', managed by forger master Geert-Jan Jansen. He made the entire castle available for a mobile studio. Kapok recorded the album in two weeks, in a beautiful setting surrounded by hundreds of paintings.
Kapok combines elements from different genres and traditions: phrasing and harmonies of jazz; stage energy and compact forms of pop and funk; grooves and percussion instruments from roots music; interactive and abstract sound combinations from free improvisations. The use of instruments is special: they play without a bass instrument, the drums is put together by themselves and the melody-instrument is the horn, with a classical tradition.
