Artists and cultural practitioners from Indigenous communities around the world are increasingly in the international spotlight. 'Indigenous', of in het Nederlands indigeen, duidt op de oorspronkelijke bewoners (en hun huidige nakomelingen) van een land of gebied. Zij waren er al in de tijd dat dat gebied bijvoorbeeld gekoloniseerd werd, of op het moment dat omliggende of dominante groepen een natiestaat vormden. Vaak leven indigene bewoners in overeenstemming met culturele gebruiken en tradities, waarmee ze zich onderscheiden van de officiele instituties van het land waar ze nu deel van uitmaken.
De specifieke gebruiken, kunst en cultuur van indigenous gemeenschappen krijgen wereldwijd steeds meer aandacht. Sovereign Words is een eerste brede verkenning in het formuleren van uitgangspunten en een gemeenschappelijk vocabulaire om indigene kunst gelaagd en betekenisvol te kunnen beschouwen.
